McGuinness in clear after 'spy' probe
The Secretary of State has been told there is no substance to the Martin McGuinness spy allegations, the Belfast Telegraph can reveal today.
All intelligence agencies - Army, MI5, MI6 and Police - were asked to provide Peter Hain with a "full account" of information following recent newspaper reports naming McGuinness as a British spy and claiming that MI6 had encouraged the IRA to use the so-called human bomb tactic.
Senior political sources speaking to this newspaper revealed details of the Hain "investigation" and confirmed that checks had been made with all intelligence departments - special branch, security services and military.
According to one source, it was quickly established that the allegations were "rubbish" - "total nonsense".
The McGuinness spy claims have been sourced to a former handler in the Army's Force Research Unit who calls himself Martin Ingram.
A fortnight ago, a Sunday newspaper published an alleged transcript of a conversation said to be between McGuinness and an MI6 handler.
The republican figure - who holds senior leadership positions in Sinn Fein and the IRA - was not named in the document, but Ingram alleged that references to J118 were code for McGuinness.
Other codes - J119, B328, SA3 and SA1 - were included in the alleged document, but the Secretary of State has been told that the references are not recognised by any of the intelligence agencies. Read more
db: In matters such as this there is just no way of knowing what the f is going on. Of course the Brits would know that the last people the republican movement is going to listen to are the security services ... so this announcement might well be designed to increase tensions rather than clear the air. It may also be designed to dampen down the current spike in talk of British collusion with terrorists, and the murder of its own civilians via proxy killers. As we've said before we have not the slightest idea concerning Martin McGuinness's guilt - and the above story brings enlightenment no closer. Martin Ingram needs to come up with some evidence beyond that already produced. In a recent comment on Slugger he claimed that his mission to 'get' McGuinness would proceed like a piece of German engineering. People are waiting.
