UK soldier killed in Afghanistan

reuters: A British soldier was killed and another seriously wounded in a gunbattle with Taliban forces in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, the Ministry of Defence said.

A spokeswoman told Reuters that a British military mobile patrol was engaged in a firefight with suspected Taliban insurgents in Helmand province in the southwest of the country.

"Sadly as a result of this engagement one UK soldier was killed and another seriously injured," she said.

The death was the first British military fatality since British forces deployed to the volatile area of Helmand in recent months. Read more
