Arab League convoy under fire in Baghdad

forbes/afx: A convoy carrying envoys from the Arab League came under fire in the Iraqi capital on Monday, injuring six security guards, an interior ministry source said.

Shots were fired at the convoy in western Baghdad as members of the delegation were heading to the headquarters of the Committe of Muslim Scholars, the main Sunni Arab religious organisation in Iraq.

The mission had arrived in Baghdad yesterday to prepare for a visit by Arab League Secretary General Amr Mussa, amid tensions between the Iraqi authorities and the pan-Arab organisation over the new draft constitution.

The envoys were due to join the Sunni Muslim clerics for iftar, the daily meal at sundown that breaks the fast during the holy month of Ramadan. Read more
