Former commander of US army's 1st Cavalry Division sacked
A US army four-star general has been relieved of command for "matters of personal conduct," a Pentagon spokesman said.
An army official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the matter involved "potential infidelity."
In announcing the action, Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman, provided no details on why General Kevin Byrnes was relieved of command of the army's Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Monroe, Virginia.
"He was relieved for matters of personal conduct," Whitman told reporters.
The sacking of a four-star general for personal misconduct is rare, if not unprecedented.
"It is certainly highly unusual" said the official.
