Deputy Prescott sideshow

People are gathering, expecting a big fall any day now. The crack is evident, and the damage is only getting worse. If it happens soon it'll be a spectacular event, and there are worries about what else is crumbling to pieces. John Prescott is a crash waiting to happen.

In political terms, the erosion of Prescott's power and his struggle to remain a credible Deputy Prime Minister and deputy leader of the Labour Party was effectively over in April this year when he was forced to admit an affair with his diary secretary, Tracey Temple.

Prescott has been able to hang on only because his future and Tony Blair's are interlinked. But, as one Labour MP said on Friday night: "John was wounded; now he's crawling. It would be sad if this was somehow unexpected, but it isn't." Read more
