They just got a different tool to use than we do: They kill innocent lives to achieve objectives. That's what they do. And they're good. They get on the TV screens and they get people to ask questions about, well, you know, this, that or the other. I mean, they're able to kind of say to people: Don't come and bother us, because we will kill you. Bush - Joint News Conference with Blair - 28 July '06

"Islamic Fascists" hate our freedom

President Bush said Thursday that a foiled plot to blow up multiple flights between Britain and the United States shows "this nation is at war with Islamic fascists."

At war with "Islamic fascists" are we? Do they hate our freedom? Yes they do - "[they] will use any means to destroy those of us who love freedom" he said [that's why the Swiss get so much grief from al Qaeda]. If - and it's a big 'if' - given the track record on 'intelligence' driven terrorism operations in the UK - this all turns out to be real and charges are brought and people are found to be guilty in a court of law it will have nothing to do with anything other than the desperate hatred carried in the hearts of the "Islamic fascists" for our freedom and our values. Nothing whatsoever to do with US or UK foreign policy - which we all know continues to be above reproach.

A cynic might see a connection with the events currently unfolding in the Middle East - and that this 'foiled plot' to inflict mass murder "on an unimaginable scale" is just too convenient. We will wait and see before making judgment - my guess is that hype and spin are playing a part.

Oh, and if it's really our freedom they hate then we will all soon be safe - given the amount of it we are losing under this government. The former failed defence minister and current home secretary John Reid said only yesterday, bizarrely, that we should be prepared to give up some more.
