France, US split over Lebanon
The US and France have split over crucial provisions in the United Nations resolution to end hostilities in Lebanon, triggering intense diplomatic scrambling.
The two co-sponsors of the draft resolution agreed on the need for changes after Lebanon's proposal to deploy 15,000 troops in the south.
France wants to incorporate ideas from Lebanon's new proposals, while the US has accepted Israel's concerns about any changes.
But the Arab League has warned the UN that Lebanon could lapse back into civil war if the draft ceasefire resolution was passed in its present form.
Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani, representing the Arab League, told the Security Council that adopting the resolution, which was not enforceable, would have grave ramifications for Lebanon.
"If we adopt the resolution without fully considering the reality of Lebanon, we face a civil war. Instead of helping Lebanon, we will destroy Lebanon." Read more
