They just got a different tool to use than we do: They kill innocent lives to achieve objectives. That's what they do. And they're good. They get on the TV screens and they get people to ask questions about, well, you know, this, that or the other. I mean, they're able to kind of say to people: Don't come and bother us, because we will kill you. Bush - Joint News Conference with Blair - 28 July '06

Lebanon: "It will take us time to destroy what is left"

At least 40 civilians were killed and scores of buildings were flattened in southern Lebanon Wednesday as Israeli warplanes bombed targets for an eighth day.

The attacks came as Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert called Prime Minister Stephen Harper Wednesday to express his condolences on the recent deaths of seven Canadians in Lebanon.

Seven members of the Al-Akhrass family, including four young children, were on vacation when they were killed Sunday as Israel bombed the southern village of Aitaroun.

According to federal officials in Ottawa, Olmert reiterated Israel's desire to avoid unnecessary deaths and said Israel would do whatever it could to facilitate in the evacuation of Canadians.

Meanwhile, at least 20 people were reported killed when fresh Israeli air strikes destroyed 15 homes in the southern village of Srifa, near Tyre Wednesday, while police said at least 20 died in other air raids.

The village's headman, Hussein Kamaledine, said 25 to 30 people lived in the houses, but it was not known if they were at home at the time.

"This is a real massacre," Kamaledine told Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV as fire engines extinguished the blaze and rescue workers searched for survivors.

Israeli bombers, which had been focusing on Hezbollah strongholds in southern Beirut, also hit a Christian suburb on the eastern side of the capital for the first time.

The target was a truck that was used to drill for water which Israeli troops may have mistaken for a missile launcher. The vehicle was destroyed, but nobody was hurt in that attack.

Civilian deaths were also reported in air strikes on other parts of the south and near Baalbek in the east of Lebanon.

Meanwhile, rockets fired from Lebanon struck the northern Israeli city of Haifa on Wednesday, causing several minor injuries, witnesses said.

Israel has declared it is ready to fight Hezbollah guerrillas for several more weeks, raising doubts about international efforts to broker an immediate cease-fire.

"It will take us time to destroy what is left," Brig. Gen. Alon Friedman, a senior army commander, told Israeli Army Radio on Wednesday. Read more

db: Olmert - what a guy - took time out from killing all those Lebanese women and children to offer up his condolences for slaughtering Canadians. Clearly we have misjudged this person. Note that the report above suggests that Israel may have mistaken the water drilling truck for a missile launcher. And what did they mistake the milk factory for? And the paper box factory? And the Lebanese army guys who were trying to fix the electricity supply [before they were 'fixed' by an Israeli strike].
Israel knows what it is doing in Lebanon - the shameful thing is that our 'leaders' know too ... and do nothing.
