Abbas 'works to end crisis', Rice pledges 50M bucks
... Meanwhile in Gaza the Palestinian president says he's making every effort to end the crisis in Gaza, but he's asking the US to pressure Israel to help halt the offensive on Jerusalem's end.
The fighting on Israel's southern front that began with the abduction of an Israeli soldier has killed at least 86 Palestinians.
In a phone call with the moderate Palestinian leader, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pledged to add $50 Million to humanitarian aid for Palestinians. The region has lost desperately-needed international support since a government takeover by Hamas militants. Link
db: Paragraph 1, Abbas is and has always been Israel's plaything - he has little power over the Hamas wing that captured the Israeli soldier and as for his request for the US to pressure Israel he should know that it's an election year and such requests present 'difficulties'.
Paragraph 2, AP helpfully reminds us that this all kicked off with the 'abduction' of an Israeli soldier - this, whilst convenient, overlooks the killing of many innocent Palestinians in the weeks preceding - remember 'slaughter on the beach'? 'Abduction' is not the right word, 'capture' is more appropriate, the Israeli forces are after all the illegal occupier - 'abductions' are what the CIA carries out on the streets of Europe against innocent Muslims with the intention of transporting them to 'friendly' countries for the purpose of torture.
Paragraph 3, Rice has pledged $50M - this is for domestic US consumption - no one else is stupid enough to think that it is significant as either a capital sum or as proof that the US government gives a shit. Final trivial point - the so-called 'government takeover' was a democratic election.
Apart from that we endorse everything AP has to say in these three paragraphs.
