UN ceasefire resolution on hold - civilians betrayed

As Lebanese and Israeli civilians continued to die in attacks by Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants, the United Nations Security Council put plans for a Mideast ceasefire resolution on hold.
"I think the quickest way to bring an end to the armed conflict in the region is for Hezbollah to release the two soldiers that it has kidnapped and Hamas to release the soldier it has kidnapped," U.S. Ambassador John Bolton told reporters after hours of consultations yesterday and on the weekend.
An immediate ceasefire resolution could be considered "once that initial act of terrorism is reversed," he said, adding, "Israel is acting within its legitimate right of self-defence." Read more
