They just got a different tool to use than we do: They kill innocent lives to achieve objectives. That's what they do. And they're good. They get on the TV screens and they get people to ask questions about, well, you know, this, that or the other. I mean, they're able to kind of say to people: Don't come and bother us, because we will kill you. Bush - Joint News Conference with Blair - 28 July '06

SBS airs Abu Ghraib abuse images

abc.au: Public broadcaster SBS Television has aired what it says are previously unpublished images of abuses committed by US soldiers at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

The Dateline program aired new video and photographs revealing torture, sexual humiliation of Iraqi prisoners and evidence that a number of them had been shot dead.

An army report lists three men killed in a riot, following protests over living conditions.

The program broadcast video footage of prisoners being forced to masturbate in front of guards.

US soldiers also filmed a prisoner from several angles smashing his head against a cell door.

Some of the US guards who have already been sentenced for their part in the abuse, including Private Lynndie England, are seen in the new photographs.

Amrit Singh from the American Civil Liberties Union has called for more action over the abuse.

"We hope that the release of these photographs will bring about further pressure to hold high-ranking officials accountable for what we now know to have been systemic and widespread abuse occurring throughout Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay," he said.

The US Government had tried to stop the release of this material, which was leaked to SBS Link
