Anger at Guantanamo force-feeding
theage: US military authorities have taken tougher measures to force-feed hunger striking detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after concluding that some were determined to commit suicide to protest at their indefinite confinement.
Guards have started to strap recalcitrant detainees into "restraint chairs", sometimes for hours, to tube-feed them and prevent them from deliberately vomiting afterward.
Detainees who refuse to eat have been placed in isolation, military officials said, and told that their protests are futile because their petitions for release have been denied.
...Lawyers visiting clients in recent weeks criticised the measures, particularly the use of restraint chairs, as abusive.
"It is clear that the Government has ended the hunger strike through the use of force and through the most brutal and inhumane types of treatment," said Thomas Wilner, a lawyer who last week visited the six Kuwaiti detainees he represents. "It is a disgrace." Read more
