Iraq: Sunnis seek to create a front with Muqtada Al Sadr
Saleh Al Mutlaq, spokesman for the Iraqi National Dialogue Council (Sunni) said, "We are attempting to meet with all those opposing the federation. The issue was not just a Sunni issue." He added, "The issue became the issue of everyone, including the Shiaas, who do not desire to see a divided Iraq." Al Mutlaq." Al Mutlaq pointed out, "We want to cooperate with the young Shiite clergyman Muqtada Al Sadr. We would attempt to negotiate with him soon." He continued, "Later on, we would attempt to hold a national conference against the project of the constitution. This meeting would be held in the near future."
In his response to a question on the opinion of the trend in Al Mutlaq's suggestions, a source in the Sadri trend, who requested anonymity, said, "The trend has not yet taken an official situation with regard to the project of the constitution drat." He added, "There are some identities that support it and others are against it. The final word is left for Al Sayyid Muqtada Al Sadr." The source continued, "At present, we do not have a situation apart from calling Iraqis to register their names on the electors lists in preparation for the general popular plebiscite which is hoped to be conducted by mid-October."
Immediately after the final draft of the Iraqi constitution has been announced, the national dialogue council, which Al Mutlaq belongs to, has confirmed that it opposes the draft.
